on Attorney Cooper’s Life

James T. Cooper’s Ravenswood, WV high school educational experience and social interests were dominated by his love of sports and these influences have made him the strong, confident attorney that he is today. He lettered in football, baseball, and basketball, earned the American Legion Certificate School Award, and was class president for all three high school years. He was a member of the all-state teams for all three sports and served as captain of the West Virginia All-State Football Team, as well.

Attorney James T. Cooper attended West Virginia State University on a football scholarship, where he earned his B.S. in Business Administration in 1964. He went on to earn his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law in 1967.

While in college, James enjoyed playing offense and defense as a member of the WVU Mountaineers Football Team from 1960 to September 1963 when he suffered a career-ending knee injury. He was named a West Virginia Centennial Sports Great by the WV Centennial Commission in 1963.

James T. Cooper enjoyed his tenure as Assistant Editor of the West Virginia University Law Review and his membership in the social groups: Phi Delta Phi, Beta Theta Pi, Fi Batar Cappar as Mock Honorary Member, and WVU’s Mountain as Honorary Member.


Attorney Cooper Served Our Country in Active Duty

Attorney Cooper gained military experience when he was commissioned as a Signal Corps Officer in the United States Army in 1964. He also served our country in active duty from August 1967 through July 1969. James T. Cooper attained the rank of Captain and served as a Company Commander in Vietnam from August 1968 through July 1969. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Army Commendation Medal for his service.


Devotion to Legal Service and Career Highlights

Attorney James T. Cooper’s career highlights have been dominated by his devotion to legal service. He has been a private practice attorney continuously since 1971. Prior to opening his own private legal firm, Attorney Cooper worked as a Lawyer for the West Virginia State Tax Department from 1970-71. He served as a Project Manager in Continuing Education at the West Virginia University from 1969-70.

He was admitted to bar in 1967: West Virginia and U.S. District Court, Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia; 1971: U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit. He has served as Special Commissioner of Kanawha County Circuit Court (Domestic). He is also a member of the West Virginia State Bar.

James Truman Cooper was born on November 26, 1942 in Parkersburg, WV, the son of Katherine Derenberger Cooper and Isaac Truman Cooper. He has one sibling, a brother: Charles Edward Cooper.

On August 30, 1969, James was united in the state of matrimony with Katherine Jae Spears. His daughter, Katherine Cooper joined the family on September 8, 1978.
